The Smilellemon Journal

Small days. Good company.

Meet the family, then stay for the little things. Stories with MILOLO, TOMIMI and PEDODO.

MILOLO · Meet the family

Hi, I’m MILOLO. I Have Big Plans for Your Sofa.

A striped straw, a very full social calendar, and absolutely nowhere urgent to be.

MILOLO

Hello, I’m MILOLO. Yes, the straw is part of the look. No, I don’t have a beverage menu. I’m a plush cup with a soft white lid, excellent sitting skills, and a strong interest in whatever you were about to watch.

People see the bright red outfit and assume I’m always ready for a party. I am, provided the party has somewhere comfortable to sit. My ideal guest list is you, a cushion, and a remote that hasn’t disappeared between the cushions again.

I take small occasions seriously. Finished a difficult email? That counts. Found the matching sock? Huge. Closed all forty-seven browser tabs? We may need a commemorative photograph. I’ll bring the smile; you can decide whether the photograph needs a caption.

Around the Smilellemon family, TOMIMI usually knows where the good seat is. PEDODO arrives with several opinions about it. I try to keep things moving, although my definition of moving includes shifting three inches toward a softer pillow.

So that’s me: red cup, striped straw, quietly ambitious sofa companion. Put me near your reading corner or movie-night setup and I’ll settle in. If anyone asks about my schedule, tell them I’m fully booked for a little time together.

TOMIMI · Meet the family

I’m TOMIMI. Every Hour Is Golden Hour.

Meet the fries-shaped friend who considers a comfortable corner a major life achievement.

TOMIMI

Hello, I’m TOMIMI. Before we get too far: I’m plush. Please admire the golden fries, but keep the ketchup at a respectful distance. These white gloves have enough to worry about.

You’ll recognize me by the red carton, pink cheeks, and hairstyle that requires no styling whatsoever. I wake up like this. It is both my greatest convenience and the reason hats are complicated.

I like the part of the day when the big jobs are finished and the small pleasures get their turn. A book with a good opening sentence. A patch of afternoon light. The moment you sit down and realize you don’t have to get straight back up.

MILOLO calls me the family’s comfort expert. I prefer ‘independent seating consultant.’ The job involves trying every corner of the sofa, considering the evidence, and choosing the corner I liked in the first place. PEDODO sometimes joins the assessment. With that many peas, the meeting can run long.

I’m happy to keep you company while you read, daydream, or debate whether one more chapter is a sensible decision. I won’t judge the answer. I may already be waiting beside the book.

That’s my introduction. Golden on top, soft all over, and very pleased to meet you. Now, which seat were you saving for me?

Meet PEDODO: One Pod, Several Opinions.

A green introduction from a friend whose smallest decisions require a group discussion.

PEDODO

Hello. I’m PEDODO. We’re very pleased to meet you. That was not a typo: being a pod means even a short introduction can turn into a committee meeting.

One pea wants to wave. Another wants to tell a joke. A third would like a little more information before committing to either option. The last one seems happy just to be here. Honestly, that last pea has the right idea.

You’ll spot me by my green pod, expressive little faces, and long arms with white gloves. The arms are useful for the very important business of looking welcoming. The faces handle the commentary.

I enjoy slow mornings, leafy corners, and plans with room for a pause. I once proposed a quiet afternoon. It passed unanimously, although someone requested a snack break during the vote. MILOLO offered to organize the occasion. TOMIMI asked whether the meeting could take place on the sofa. It could.

If you’ve ever felt cheerful, curious, uncertain, and ready for a nap in the same afternoon, we’ll probably get along. You don’t have to choose one mood before joining the family.

There is only one PEDODO here, but we do bring a little company. Make some room beside you. We’ll try to agree on which side to sit.

MILOLO and the Case of the Missing Remote

Movie night begins with a mystery. The prime suspect is a cushion.

MILOLO

At 7:02, MILOLO was ready for movie night. At 7:03, the remote was not. This was unfortunate, because MILOLO had already committed to a very comfortable position.

The investigation began with the nearest cushion. It looked innocent, which was exactly what a cushion hiding a remote would look like. MILOLO examined the gap beside it with the seriousness of a detective who had watched half a detective film once.

No remote. A receipt, however, had been recovered. It offered no clues, unless the suspect had recently purchased bananas.

The search expanded to the armchair, the bookshelf, and the place where everyone insisted they had definitely left it. That last location proved particularly unhelpful. MILOLO paused to consider the evidence. Perhaps movie night could become reading night. Books rarely required a remote, which was a point in their favor.

Then someone lifted the original cushion. There it was, exactly where a remote would hide if it wanted a quiet evening.

Case closed. MILOLO returned to the sofa, the opening credits rolled, and the remote received a designated spot on the table. This arrangement lasted until the first snack break. Some mysteries are destined for a sequel.

MILOLO’s Very Ambitious Five-Minute Pause

A short break develops a schedule of its own.

MILOLO

MILOLO had written a list. It was a good list: tidy, optimistic, and much longer than the afternoon. The first item was ‘make a start.’ This felt achievable.

After making a start, MILOLO decided a five-minute pause was in order. A nearby reading corner offered excellent facilities for this purpose. There was soft light, a comfortable place to sit, and a book that appeared to have been waiting patiently.

Minute one was spent settling in. Minute two involved selecting a page. During minute three, a particularly interesting sentence introduced itself. By minute four, the next paragraph had become essential context.

The five-minute pause did not end at five minutes. MILOLO considered this a scheduling misunderstanding rather than a personal failure.

When the book finally closed, the list was still there. Nothing had mysteriously completed itself. But the afternoon no longer felt like a race against a sheet of paper. MILOLO chose one small task and did that first.

Later, a final item was added to the bottom of the list: ‘Find out what happens in chapter two.’ For once, there was no difficulty getting started. The reading corner remained available for further research.

TOMIMI Reorganizes the Bookshelf. Almost.

An excellent filing system meets an even better first chapter.

TOMIMI

TOMIMI announced that the bookshelf needed organizing. Nobody had complained about it, but the announcement sounded wonderfully productive.

The first proposed system was alphabetical. This lasted until TOMIMI remembered that titles beginning with ‘The’ could cause a discussion. The second system was by color. Very attractive, until the yellow books made TOMIMI feel personally responsible for their arrangement.

A third system emerged: books already read, books still to read, and books opened while deciding where they belonged. That final category expanded at an alarming rate.

One book had an intriguing first sentence. Another had a map. TOMIMI had never intended to spend the afternoon investigating a fictional coastline, but some opportunities simply present themselves.

By late afternoon, three books had changed shelves and one had moved to the sofa. This was technically a reorganization. TOMIMI felt the distinction deserved recognition.

The rest of the books could wait. They had been standing around all week; a little more patience would do them no harm. TOMIMI settled beside the chosen volume and opened it again. Tomorrow’s task list would say ‘finish the bookshelf.’ Which part of the bookshelf was open to interpretation.

The Sunny Seat Is Reserved for TOMIMI

A patch of sunlight moves across the room. Its biggest fan follows.

TOMIMI

At the start of the afternoon, a patch of sunlight landed on the sofa. TOMIMI noticed immediately. Some people follow the news. TOMIMI follows promising seating conditions.

The first spot was excellent: warm-looking light, a cushion within reach, and a view of absolutely nothing that needed doing. TOMIMI settled in with the expression of someone who had made a wise investment.

Twenty minutes later, the sunlight moved. TOMIMI regarded this as an unauthorized change to the arrangement.

A small adjustment restored order. Then another. Eventually the sunny patch reached the floor, which created a difficult question: remain on the sofa, or follow the afternoon to its next appointment?

TOMIMI chose the floor. The rug was comfortable, and the new position provided an interesting view of the room’s lower shelves. A forgotten magazine was discovered. The afternoon had added reading material to the booking.

When the sunlight finally left, TOMIMI stayed a little longer. It turned out the seat had other qualities. Later, when MILOLO asked whether the best spot had been found, TOMIMI nodded. Several best spots, actually. A very successful afternoon of research.

The PEDODO Bedtime Committee Is Now in Session

Four peas. One pillow. A surprisingly complicated agenda.

PEDODO

The bedtime meeting began with a simple proposal: settle down. It should have been a short meeting.

The first pea supported the proposal. The second requested one more story. The third wondered whether the blanket was arranged correctly. The fourth was already looking rather pleased with the pillow and declined to comment.

PEDODO considered the options. A story seemed reasonable, provided it was short. The blanket could be adjusted once. Nobody needed to reorganize the entire room at this hour, although someone briefly suggested it.

PEDODO in a quiet home scene

The story began. Halfway through, a question arrived about a very minor character. The answer required another sentence, which raised another question. PEDODO discovered that ‘one more story’ was not a precise unit of time.

Eventually the book closed. The blanket stayed where it was. The room grew quiet enough that nobody felt the need to improve it.

The committee agreed to postpone all remaining business until morning. No vote was recorded; everyone seemed comfortable with the result. PEDODO leaned against the pillow, and the meeting officially ended. Tomorrow’s agenda could wait. For once, every pea was on the same page.

PEDODO Takes the Welcome-Home Shift

The job description is simple: be there when the door opens.

PEDODO

PEDODO volunteered for the welcome-home shift. The position required patience, a friendly presence, and the ability to sit near the door without demanding a detailed explanation of everyone’s day.

Preparations were thorough. One pea practiced a cheerful greeting. Another favored a quiet nod. A third suggested asking whether anything interesting had happened. The fourth preferred to let the arriving person put their bag down first. This was widely considered sensible.

The afternoon passed. A delivery vehicle stopped outside, then moved on. A shadow crossed the window. Somewhere, a neighbor’s door opened. PEDODO remained at the post, displaying admirable commitment to a job with no formal uniform beyond being green.

Finally, the familiar key turned. The door opened. The carefully planned greeting was immediately forgotten.

It didn’t matter. PEDODO was there, with all those little faces and no urgent request. The bag went down. The shoes came off. Someone smiled at the green pod waiting nearby.

Later, the welcome-home shift moved to the reading corner. There was no clocking-out procedure, but there was a comfortable place to sit together. PEDODO decided the position suited them. Applications for tomorrow’s shift were already closed.
